Georgia is one of the first states in the country to form a statewide multi-disciplinary organization for those who help patients navigate their cancer journey. CPNG is comprised of individuals who have a variety of education and training and serve people with all types of cancer, at all stages, and in all types of settings. The organization became a Local Navigator Network (LNN) of The Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators in 2019 and is the first in Georgia to become an LNN.
The mission of CPNG is to connect and educate patient navigators in Georgia. Navigators play a clearly defined, consistent and sustainable role for all Georgians throughout the cancer continuum to include prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and end of life care.
CPNG’s objectives are to:
- build a shared sense of purpose in the field;
- foster collaboration and share best practices;
- identify the needs of cancer patient navigators and match them with resources;
- bring clarity and structure to the role of cancer patient navigators in Georgia -- defining their value in affecting overall outcomes and educating target audiences about their significance; and
- attract and sustain membership.
CPNG also works to define standardized core competencies for navigators. Members strive for excellence through statewide communications, professional development opportunities and networking.
A cancer patient navigator is someone with special training who helps patients navigate their cancer journey.Navigators can work for the cancer center or an outside organization. Sometimes, they are a nurse or a social worker. Other times, they are a trained volunteer.
